About the Iconic LEGO Brick Design

In the year 1932, the LEGO group was founded by a carpenter known as Ole Kirk Kristiansen. It started in a small workshop making basic wooden toys for children. Awarded the honor of the "Toy of the Century" award twice, LEGO has made its mark in the world through a simplistic design methodology. What is it that makes the iconic LEGO brick design stand out?

History & Foundation

Even though the company was founded in 1932 and was building toys out of wood, it wasn't until 1958 that the LEGO patent art for plastic bricks was registered. The initial designs were laid forward in 1949 and the bricks were available for sale in five different colors. These designs were hollow and not as rigid. Children could engage in building using these bricks, but they were prone to falling down if they were subjected to movement. As years passed, the company was passed down the family and kept its vision alive in its operation.

The Classic Lego Brick Design

The LEGO brick patent in 1958 was what changed everything for the company. The classic design aimed at allowing children to expand their imagination and creativity when it came to building. The most unique aspect about the LEGO patent print was the simplicity in its design. The idea was to be able to build complex and creative structures using simple, small bricks.

In 1963, LEGO introduced building guides as well as more materials to its inventory. Finally, in 1978, it released action figures, involved in the LEGO building process. And in 1998, the idea of a programmable LEGO set was put forward.

Lego Innovations and Beyond

What started off as a simple plastic brick is now being taken to levels way beyond that. LEGO sets now provide all sorts of shapes and colors along with other building materials. Moreover, the LEGO company has moved beyond just physical toys and has entered the realm of video games and movies.

LEGO has maintained its quality and sustainability for almost a century now. If your children were to pick up the plastic bricks from the 1950s, they will still be able to put together a structure and play with them. LEGO has remained true to its business model by sticking to its niche as well as creatively expanding it. It's clever designs have enabled it to become a child's favorite toy. It allows kids to expand their imagination and learn through engaging with safe and exciting building materials.

What we know for sure is that children will always want to build, engage in stories, and play. LEGO has provided them with a complete package through its bricks. The engineering and design involved in the LEGO process has allowed the concept to become one of the finest and most iconic ideas of the 20th century.
